01 Respect and behaviour
Public behaviour
- Be polite and direct.
- Do not mock the war, losses or national symbols.
- Respect queues and personal space.
- Do not argue aggressively with officials.
Respect for service members
Ukrainians usually show strong respect for those serving. Be professional, sober, clean, punctual and disciplined.
“Slava Ukraini!”
“Slava Ukraini!” means “Glory to Ukraine!” The traditional response is “Heroiam slava!” — “Glory to the heroes!” Use it respectfully.
02 Language and daily culture
Useful attitude
Many people understand some English, but do not expect it everywhere. Learning basic Ukrainian greetings and safety phrases creates trust and prevents confusion.
Ukrainian hospitality
Ukrainians can be very hospitable, but during wartime people may be tired, direct or stressed. Do not take this personally.
Memorials and churches
Memorials, churches and cemeteries are treated respectfully. Keep quiet, dress appropriately if entering and follow local rules.
